Owner and operator Melissa Laing had the vision of creating a centre that was a natural learning oasis. A place where children had free play to safely explore, build confidence, and become empowered as an individual. Where free play allows them to build relationships, unfold naturally and feel a sense of belonging.

To fully encompass the principles of our philosophy, Star ratios are never below 1 teacher to every 4 children at Whetū Iti and 1 teacher to 8 children at Whetū Nui. This allows us to have best practice where we promote an emotionally nurturing, peaceful, trusting environment where teachers can be responsive to children’s needs.

Star is licensed for 65 children over both spaces, with a maximum of 25 under two year olds at any one time, however we often keep under this in order to maintain our peaceful environment.

The Star team members are made up of a diverse range of teachers where their teaching expertise, qualifications and experience create a well balanced, fun, passionate team with the same belief that children are capable and competent.
